Compare it to buying a CD at a music store. You need a player to enjoy the music. "Players" for using the Best of Creative Lettering could be any program that can read and display a WMF file and type out text using your Windows fonts. Some examples are WordPerfect, Word, CorelDRAW!, Print House, Announcements, and Print Artist. The programs must be Windows based to use the WMF graphics file format (the default for Windows). First, start up the program you will be using. From here you can either copy the images from the browser (see Browser section) and paste them into your program (Edit, Paste), OR you can retrieve them directly into your program. Most desk-top publishing programs use one of the following commands to pull in an image directly: RETRIEVE, IMPORT, PLACE, OPEN, INSERT. If you have further questions on how your program works, please consult the manual that came with your computer program. Recommendation: If you are a beginner, use the first method to access the image in your desktop or word processing program, by clicking on Edit, Paste. 2 - INSTALLATION In order to use the fonts with your Windows programs, you must install them to your system. At the time of installation, you have the option of installing the graphic images and browser to your hard drive (which takes quite a bit of space), or installing the Best of Creative Lettering start-up icon so you can run the browser directly from the CD. Again, you must go through the installation process to use the True Type fonts within your Windows programs. TO INSTALL IN WINDOWS 3.1 * Insert Best of Creative Lettering CD. * Go to File, Run. * Type "D:CKSetup" (or the letter of your CD drive). * Follow the prompts on your screen. TO INSTALL IN WINDOWS 95, 98 * Insert Best of Creative Lettering CD. * If Autorun is on, you will see dialog box. If so, select "Install." * Follow the promps on your screen. OR if Autorun is off, do the following: * Insert Best of Creative Lettering CD. * Go to Start, Run. * Type "D:CKSetup" (or the letter of your CD drive). * Follow the prompts on your screen. 3 - USING THE BROWSER The Best of Creative Lettering Browser is a tool to let you easily scroll through your images on the screen, then copy them into the clipboard for use in other programs. CATEGORY TABS Each set of images is divided up into corresponding issues of Creating Keepsakes magazine. For example, if you wanted a Creative Lettering phrase that you saw in the May/June 1998 issue, you would click on the "1998 May/Jun" tab, which contains all phrases and alphabets contained in that issue. You can also click on the "All Images" tab to combine the graphics from all the issues. IMAGES/SAMPLE PAGES Below the thumbnail sketches are two selections: "Images" and "Sample Pages." The "Images" selection will show you all the usable lettering graphics and alphabets within the category tab. The "Sample Pages" selection will show you some samples of scrapbook pages created using the lettering images contained in the category tab. All images in the "Sample Pages" selection can be previewed, but not copied to the Windows clipboard. THUMBNAIL WINDOW The Thumbnail Window displays the images contained within the selected category tab. If there are more images than will fit in a window, you may scroll through them by clicking on the scroll arrow on the side of the Thumbnail Window. Please note that some thumbnail images may be relatively larger than others (eg. the lower-case letter a is the same size as the upper-case A). All image thumbnails were scaled to fit a certain box size, and so they may appear relatively larger or smaller. Most desktop publishing or word processing programs will let you scale the images once they are pasted. PREVIEW To preview an image, simply click on the thumbnail and a larger version will appear in the Preview Window. To enlarge the image even further, click on the image in the Preview Window. COPY TO CLIPBOARD When you have found the image you want to use, simply click on the thumbnail so the image appears in the Preview Window, then click on "Copy to Clipboard." This will place the image onto the Windows clipboard for use with other programs. To retrieve the image from the clipboard in your desk-top publishing or word processing program, click on Edit, Paste. A: - Your fonts are identical to the other fonts in your Windows system. Almost all Windows applications that use fonts will be able to use your Creative Lettering fonts. Once a font is installed, it will be selectable in your Windows program. Q: - Why are there no color fonts? A: - All True Type fonts are black and white. However, if you would like to use color versions of the fonts in the Creative Lettering CD, you can use the color alphabets seen in the browser. You will need to copy from the browser and paste to your desk top publishing or word processing program one letter at a time. Q: - How do I use them in my document? A: - In most programs, you would highlight the text to be changed, or place your cursor in the desired spot before you type in the text, and change to your Creative Lettering font. Some programs differ in this process. Please consult the users manual of your program on how to change the font. All Creative Lettering fonts begin with "CK." Q: - Can I edit a Creative Lettering font? A: - Some programs will let you make basic changes to a font, such as size, color, and line thickness. Other more advanced programs (such as CorelDRAW!) will let you convert your font to curves or outlines. From there, you can edit your font, just as you would any other image. Please consult the users manual of your program to see what specific font editing abilities it has. Q: - My Creative Lettering fonts have problems displaying or printing. What should I do? A: - If you run into any of these sorts of problems, please contact customer support via e-mail (support@inspiregraphics.com), the Internet (www.inspiregraphics.com), by fax (801/785-3878), or by snail mail: Inspire Graphics Support P.O. Box 935 Pleasant Grove, UT 84062 Note: Please read this help file entirely before contacting customer support. Please do not call Creating Keepsakes or Inspire Graphics directly with support questions. Q: - Why aren't the fonts that are in my font list like the color ones contained in the browser? A: - Windows system fonts are black and white only. The color versions are contained within the browser for your convenience. 5 - TROUBLESHOOTING (potential problems and their solutions) Q: I followed the installation directions but they didn't work. A: Make sure your graphics haven't been installed onto a different drive (such as d:) where you're not looking. If any error messages occurred during installation, please contact technical support to get help fixing the problem. Q: The colors of the images are washed out or display poorly. A: Try changing Windows display settings to at least 256 colors or higher. You do this through the Control Panel display settings. Q: Why do some fonts show blanks or boxes when I type a character? A: Only a few fonts contain all the characters on the keyboard. The rest have only the alphabet, numbers, and limited punctuation. When you type a character that is not contained in the font, it will display a box or a blank space. Q: When I click on the Creating Keepsakes Order Form, nothing happens. A: The order form is programmed to work with Windows Write (Windows 3.1) or WordPad (Windows 95, 98). If you do not have one of these programs installed with your respective operating system, nothing will appear when you select the Order Form. If you would like to order, please copy the form on the CD insert. Q: My fonts appear and print unclearly or too small. A: Some fonts were not created to be body text (the text you would use in a letter, for example) and will therefore appear blurry or unclear if printed too small. Also, your font may appear blurry, but print fine. In most cases, your monitor cannot display a font as well as it prints, so don't worry too much. -- If you encounter other problems that you cannot resolve, such as file compatibility problems or weird stuff happening on your screen, or if you suspect that you may have a defective disk, please contact customer support via e-mail (support@inspiregraphics.com), the Internet (www.inspiregraphics.com), or by fax (801/785-3878) for more specific instructions. -- If you have questions about the tools and features of your desktop publishing or word processing program, it would be best to contact the support line for your specific application. There are too many programs available for us to be completely versed in all of their functions. 6 - GENERAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Q: I don't recognize some of the thumbnail characters in the browser. A: Some alphabets contain punctuation and other symbols (such as a period or comma). Since they are sized to fit within the thumbnail window, they may not be recognizable. A good way to tell what they are is to see where they fit in relation to the other letters. For example, you will find the commas right after the letter c, exclamation marks after the letter e, and so forth. Q: I would like to print out copies of the Best of Creative Lettering CD and make copies of the Creative Lettering fonts to give to friends and family. Is this okay? A: It's fine to print out paper copies of the Best of Creative Lettering images and give them to others if you are NOT receiving any sort of monetary (or other) compensation for them. In other words, you may not resell the images in any format. You may not make copies of the CD or computer files and distribute them to others. This is a violation of your contract and copyright laws. Please see your license agreement if you have any questions. Q: I only have a black-and-white printer, but the images on the browser are color only. A: A black-and-white printer will convert color images to various shades of gray automatically. Q: When I retrieve an image directly from the CD or my hard drive (rather than going through the browser), the image is very choppy and of poor quality. A: Please be sure that the files you retrieve are WMF files and not BMP files contained in the "TNAILS" directory. The BMP files are for use as thumbnails in the browser and are scaled down in size and quality. They are for viewing purposes only. 7 - IMAGE RETRIEVAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SEVERAL PROGRAMS These instructions are for retrieving the lettering images directly into your program. Before using this method, please try copying the image first to the clipboard in the browser. Then within your program, select Edit, Paste. These instructions assume that the images are in the CK directory (subdirectory "Images"). If you have placed them elsewhere, substitute this directory for CK in the instructions. Print Shop Deluxe for Windows notes: Your version of Print Shop needs to be for Windows and no older than about three years old. Why do we say 'about'? Because Print Shop changed their software and became compatible with WMF files at about this time but didn't make any indication on their packaging to note this change. So when you look at your box, there's no real way to tell if you have the newest version until you try it. PROCEDURE: 1. Open Print Shop. Choose your desired project type, backdrop and layout. 2. Select the OBJECT menu. 3. Select ADD. 4. Select IMPORT. 5. Change graphic type to 'Windows Metafile.' 6. Navigate to locate directory with images (CK directory) and open it. 8. Open the directory with your image in it. Subjects are listed in the manual. 7. Select an image from the file list in the dialogue box. PROCEDURE EXPLANATIONS: If using a layout with predefined picture areas, (ie. grey box with teddy bear face button in the middle of it), double clicking on the button will only allow you to retrieve print shop graphics. To place a graphic in the same spot, select the grey box by clicking on it once and select CUT from the EDIT menu. Use procedures 2-7 above and place the image where the grey box was (or wherever you wish). When navigating, if you cannot find the directory you want, try double clicking on "[..]". This backs you out of any deep levels of directories you may be in and shows you all of the primary directories on your hard disk. (This is where CK should be unless you put it somewhere else). If you don't see any files in the file list when you open the CK directory, make sure the graphic type window is changed to 'Windows Metafile'. For questions about using Print Shop Deluxe, call Broderbund technical support. WordPerfect 5.2, 6.0 & 6.1, 7.0, 8.0 for Windows PROCEDURE: Version 5.2 1. Change file type or "for type" to 'Windows Metafile'. 4. In the directory box, move to the directory which contains the clip art. Double click to open. 5. Select an image from the file list. PROCEDURE NOTES: If, after selecting to place an image, you see a funny cursor like a hand holding a box instead of a dialogue box to select the graphic, WordPerfect is first asking you to make a box on your page into which the graphic will be placed. Move the hand to the desired location on the page, and create the box by dragging the cursor to another position. (Don't worry. You can always move it around later). You will then see a dialogue box for steps 2-4. You may want to use the Quick List to make graphic file retrieval easier. Consult your manual or on-line help on how to use this handy step.
